History
Nestled in the heart of Bowling Green’s downtown district is one of Ohio’s true landmark treasures, the Cla Zel Theatre. This edifice is a living historical monument that reflects a nostalgic era of Bowling Green’s storied past. The theater first opened in 1926, making it Ohio’s oldest single screen movie theater. Credited with bringing the theater to its inception are Clark and Hazel Young, after whom the theater was affectionately named. Their collective vision and passion for the movie picture industry spawned the theatrical shrine, which has survived since the pre-depression period in Northwest, Ohio.
The building design itself is a work of art and the creation of architect Jack Raney. Mr. Raney’s work is deeply rooted throughout Bowling Green. Jack Raney was the master architect behind the construction of numerous buildings on the campus of Bowling Green State University, where he was employed from 1939 to 1962. Among the works credited to Mr. Raney’s vision are the Shatzel Hall, Hayes Hall and University Hall.
Since opening in 1926, the Cla Zel Theatre has served as the scene for countless enjoyable memories for Bowling Green residents. From concerts, and themed movie events to a simple night out at the movies with friends or a sweetheart, the Cla Zel has been the epicenter for entertainment over the decades.
In 2000, the theatre was sold to local buyers and then sold again in 2007. After multiple attempts to revive the historic edifice, Ammar Mufleh purchased the theater in 2008. Mr. Mufleh had a vision to transform the landmark into a multipurpose entertainment venue. With extensive renovations and a slight modification to the original name, while still paying homage to it’s name sake, the Clazel Theatre was reborn. The theater has now been transformed into a venue designed to present a dynamic array of entertainment possibilities. Movie house, live entertainment, wine bar and banquet facility, the Clazel Theatre offers something for everyone from all walks of life and bestows upon Main Street, Bowling Green, Ohio an invigorating atmosphere that fills residents with pride.
